about

Tex:
I remember first starting to write this song on the steps of a Church in Venice on a summer morning in 2011. We were taking an opportunistic break on a whirlwind European holiday when our accommodation host delayed our meet & greet/check in. We were also partaking in another unique holiday experience of early morning beer drinking, after stumbling across a nearby festival pack down from the night before where the popup (or at that stage popping down) bar obligingly sold us some leftover stock from the previous nights festivities. I mean when you've crossed multiple time-zones in the space of weeks, the time of day becomes increasingly irrelevant.
I had purchased a cigar box guitar from a flea market in Brussels just days before (which I subsequently left behind in a hotel room in Rome just days after) and started fiddling with the concept of Easy Money which had started to take some form in my mind. I had been listening to a lot of Tom Waits and Augie March on overnight flights and train rides and I remember the early concepts of this song having a much more gypsy/polka feel than how it ultimately ended up.
Fast forward some years of toing and froing on the song (and indeed some solo performances of basic versions) Easy Money found it's home at the same time I did when I chanced upon the other Lost Canoe members. It pretty quickly turned into the raucous, energetic fusion of punk and country rock that it is today. It's a song that always goes down well live and is a lot of fun to play. I am really proud of the song and the raw and organic way that we recorded it.
The theme of the song is a warning to all those out to make a quick buck in less than wholesome ways and the characters range from stories that I'd heard to fictional creations based on people that I know.

lyrics

Easy Money – Tex Moon & Lost Canoe

Black Jack found himself on the wrong side of the tracks, he sure as hell weren’t good at
working for the man,
He’d done his time in the clink, yeah he was sinking like a brick but he came out with a brand new plan,
No nine to five could pay his debts for he was running out of time but the price of copper just kept getting higher
The day that Black Jack blacked out he blacked out the whole damn town, they found him two days later melted to a wire
Easy money, I said easy money I tell ya fella’s there ain’t no such thing
Easy money, I said easy money ain’t no amount that’s worth the bad luck it brings.

Slick Willy had the smarts he could’ve mastered any craft but he couldn’t stand the honest life the daily grind,
He took to dealin’ dope and stealin’ has more identities than feelings, he’s on a lucky streak he knows is borrowed time.
With one eye open he sleeps and such long hours he keeps, he works harder than any honest man,
His eyes are fixed over his shoulder ‘s like your mumma always told ya, there ain’t no money that can clean a dirty hand

Easy money, I said easy money, didn’t your mumma ever tel you it was wrong,
Easy money, I said easy money count it quick cuz it won’t last long
count it quick cuz it won’t last long
count it quick cuz it won’t last!!!

By the same desire we’re all driven, we all want more and that’s a fact
So you got this idea for a new style of livin’ but what good ist that in gaol or when you’re layin’ on your back.

Now Mary sits at home, she’s always waiting on her own, it ain’t her heart that’s breaking but her nerve.
For he’s always down at the track with an itch he can’t scratch, but it ain’t just money he’s losing – it’s her.

Easy money I said easy money, you’re gamblin’ more than you can bear to lose,
easy money, I said easy money, I tell ya folks the choice is yours now choose.
Easy money, I said easy money, didn’t your mumma ever tell you it was wrong,
Easy money, I said easy money count it quick cuz it won’t last long
